Personal mail and commemorative letters will be carried by horseback, Pony Express style, over the Pony Express National Historic Trail, June 13 to 23, 2012.
They will stop in Casper at the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center before continuing on their journey.
The 2012 Re-ride by the National Pony Express Association, departs Pony Express Plaza, Old Sacramento, California at 10 am June 13th and will arrive at the famed Patee House in St. Joseph, Missouri on June 23rd. The Re-ride will commemorate the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company founded by the Missouri freighting firm of Russell, Majors and Waddell. It carried letters and telegrams from April 1860 to November 1861, on the Central Route from St. Joseph to San Francisco, California.
Although it was short-lived, the Pony Express created a legacy of daring enterprise and bravery. It is a symbol of the Old West and horsemen and women still like to ride the same trail and recreate the mail service. 600 riders will each take the Poy Express Oath, receive a Bible in the tradition of the Founders, and ride relays of 1 to 5 miles each. They will relay a mochilla with commemorative and personal letters. The commemorative letter will be a vignette of Pony Express history in Kansas. The cachets can be purchased in advance for $5 - 1860 prices. Letter applications can be obtained by writing: NPEA, 2482 Road M, Emporia, Kansas 66801, or by phone (602)342-6963.
Doors open at the Trails Center at 8 a.m. and admission is free until after the rider has departed.
All visitors are welcome to the event at 11:30 but should be aware the riders could arrive as early as an hour or more before or up to an hour or more after the anticipated time.
