HISTORICAL INTEREST
PRIOR TO BECOMING A BONA FIDE CITY, the Casper area saw many visitors. Ten thousand years ago, man ran huge bison into sand traps. Skulls and bones of the animals, together with the spear joints used for the kill or to scrape hides, were found just northwest of the downtown. The Sioux and Cheyenne nations were the dominant inhabitants before the pioneers, and seekers of gold and religious freedom passed through here on the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails that followed the North Platte River.
Today, massive sculptures greet you at gateways and daintier works of art sit on city sidewalks. Actors guide you through history on evening walking tours or entertain on city stages. Knowledgeable teamsters share trail stories as where the really big fish take the bait.
