IF IT'S DECEMBER, IT MUST BE WYOMING SHOOTOUT TIME! In December 2008, Division 1 College basketball returns to Casper as the University of Wyoming WNIT Champion Cowgirls and the Cowboys play "home games" at the Casper Events Center. This one-day doubleheader gives folks from every corner of the state a chance to cheer on the Pokes!
2007 marked the first Shootout for Adventure Guide and new UW Men's Head Basketball Coach Heath Schroyer. "To be able to take our team to a city like Casper, with great fans and a great tradition of supporting basketball, is very exciting for us." Coach Shroyer should know a thing or two about excitement. His career has led him to quality programs at BYU, Fresno State, and most recently, Portland State.
For Coach Schroyer, excitement about the Shootout is great for the University, but also for the fans of Wyoming's sole Division 1 school. "When the people in that part of Wyoming get a chance to see us play, it helps build our relationship with fans throughout the state."
The Shootout will also be the first chance for many fans to see the new head coach that legendary sports broadcaster George Kay characterizes as "a very energetic young man." But the fun of Shootout weekend doesn't stop there! Fans will also discover that an excellent opportunity to explore Wyoming's Adventure Capital. Holiday shopping, dining, nightlife, cultural, and recreational opportunities await visitors at every turn. "I enjoy living in Casper because there are plenty of things to do here," says Kay.
Casper is dressed to impress during the holiday season, as are many streets and neighborhoods. Wander through some of the state's finest shops and boutiques for awesome, one-of-a-kind treasures in Downtown Casper or visit the Eastridge Mall for Wyoming's largest indoor shopping experience. Or, if your holiday shopping is already "in the bag," there are other adventures to be had-with 17 movies screens, there's always something good playing at the movie theatres. Prefer your entertainment live? The Gertrude Krampert Theatre at Casper College and Stage III Community Theatre offer consistently excellent performances. As for food? Indulge your taste buds with all sorts of cuisine, whether you're craving Italian, seafood, vegetarian fare or good ol' American chow.
Just in case not everyone in the family is sports-minded, Casper is a fountain of culture with museums showcasing both history and art. The Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center has lots to do and see for adults and kids alike. And The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center is an interactive journey through the region's rich past. "I especially recommend the Trails Center to anyone who hasn't made that attraction," urges Kay.
So pack your bags and come to town ready for a weekend full of adventure. And remember, when you're at the Events Center cheering on the home team, your battlecry is "Go, Pokes!"
